MaternityNashville Pregnancy and Maternity Photographer Steve Herlihy
The standard advice says 28 to 34 weeks.
That answer is convenient because it sounds precise. It feels responsible. It gives people something to circle on a calendar.
It is also incomplete.
The best time to take maternity photos is not determined by a week count. It is determined by how your body is functioning at that point in your pregnancy. The difference between those two approaches is significant.
“Book between 28 and 34 weeks” works well as a blanket statement. It covers most cases. It prevents booking too early. It avoids the final stretch when mobility can drop off.
But pregnancy is not standardized.
Two people at 31 weeks can look and feel completely different. One feels strong, steady, and energized. The other is managing swelling, back pain, and sleep disruption. If both book purely because they hit the same week marker, one session will feel effortless and the other will feel like work.
As a maternity photographer in Nashville, that pattern repeats often enough to stop trusting the calendar as the primary guide. Comfort shows up in posture. Fatigue shows up in the eyes. Strain shows up in the shoulders.
Weeks do not account for that.
There is a common belief that waiting longer creates more dramatic photos because the bump is larger.
Late third trimester sessions often come with reduced stamina. Standing for extended periods becomes uncomfortable. Heat tolerance drops. Swelling increases. The body negotiates every movement.
Yes, the bump may be more pronounced. But if the session feels physically taxing, that tension carries into the frame.
On the opposite end, booking too early can force the session to rely on posing to make the pregnancy visually obvious. When the bump is subtle, angles and hand placement do more of the work. That can feel constructed rather than natural.
The strongest sessions tend to happen when the pregnancy is clearly visible and the body still feels cooperative. That point does not land on the same week for everyone.
There is often a period, usually late in the second trimester, where mobility is still strong and fatigue has not peaked. For some, that window produces more relaxed, confident images than a later session would.
Season compounds this. A maternity photoshoot in Nashville scheduled outdoors in August demands more physically than one scheduled in April. Heat changes how long someone can comfortably stand, move, and focus.
Ignoring environmental factors while obsessing over week counts misses the larger picture.
Instead of asking, “What week should I book?” ask this:
Do I feel steady enough in my body that this session will feel enjoyable instead of exhausting?
If the answer is yes and the pregnancy is clearly visible without exaggerated posing, the timing is likely right.
At Steve Herlihy Photography, scheduling conversations revolve around readiness, not a rigid timeline. The goal is not simply to document how far along you are. The goal is to create images that feel grounded and strong.
Weeks are useful as reference. They are not the deciding factor.
Timing is less about the calendar and more about how you’re carrying the moment.
